What kind of evidence could refute

چکیده

A science is a series of ‘conjectures and refutations’. The most powerful conjectures are those that are formulated in such a way that they may be easily refuted by observation. On this account, Universal Grammar is an extremely weak hypothesis. This is because (i) there are very few precise formulations of exactly what is in UG (Wunderlich’s list on pp.620–623 being an admirable exception), and (ii) there are very few suggestions for how one might go about testing any precise conjectures that are put forward. Although the most common practice is to invoke UG without specifying precisely what is intended, there are some specific (thoughmostly non-exhaustive) proposals. Thinking as Evidence for the Probability of the Existence of a God: An Argument from Unnaturalness for Necessity

The objective of this article is to show that it is justified to assert that the existence of God is plausible, considering the fact that thinking itself is an immediate outcome (effect) of a thinker (cause). This idea may seem evident, but it is in fact challenged by certain claims of cognitive philosophers who aver that our knowledge of necessity and causation is, i...

Preference Reversals of a Different Kind: The "More Is Less" Phenomenon

The theory of riskless choice, as pioneered by Jeremy Bentham and James Mill, characterizes utility maximization as an individual process whereby decision makers' preferences are consistent and stable. Our study is contributing to filling this knowledge gap. We aimed to explore health policy actors’ views r...

On the lack of evidence that non-human animals possess anything remotely resembling a 'theory of mind'.

After decades of effort by some of our brightest human and non-human minds, there is still little consensus on whether or not non-human animals understand anything about the unobservable mental states of other animals or even what it would mean for a non-verbal animal to understand the concept of a 'mental state'. In the present paper, we confront four related and contentious questions head-on:...
